Obama And The 'Ford Granada'

Earlier this week, Presidential candidate Barack Obama made some comments that stirred up a few folks especially in Detroit concerning the 70's era Ford Granada.

“It may be the worst car that Detroit ever built. This thing was a tin can. It was during the ’70s when oil had just gone up so they were trying to compete with the Japanese. They wanted to keep the cars big, so they made them out of tin foil,” he was quoted as saying. “It would rattle and shake. You basically couldn’t go over 80 (miles per hour) without the thing getting out of control.”

The Detroit News runs a piece with the headline 'Obama Blasts Detroit, Ford Again'.

The Granada made its debut in 1975 and was touted
by Ford as a rival to the similarly sized Mercedes-Benz of the time. The Granada was designed and eventually replaced the Ford Maverick. The last Ford Granada was built in 1982.

I once owned a 82' Ford Granada and drove it until around 1998. No question it was simple transportation but I did get over 125,000 miles on it before it finally died. Was it the worst car Detroit ever built? Probably not...I think that title should still go to the Chevrolet Vega.
